Hairy Encounters!

5 Years, 47 Weeks.

I had a couple of borderline scary situations this week.  I use the term "borderline" because they really weren't at all scary, but had the potential to be.  And even that's a stretch.

Okay, I had a couple of really interesting things happen this week.

The first happened early Friday morning.  The kids had 4 days off due to the Easter holiday weekend, so they had taken their time getting up in the morning, putzing around after breakfast.  That's when I noticed Madelyn's hair up top sticking up, thinking that's strange, I've never seen it stand up on it's OH MY WORD!!!   My hands immediately went up to cover my mouth, a slight gasping sound escaping through my fingers.  If she couldn't see my entire facial expression, then the shocked look in my eyes told her all she needed to know.  Which set her off crying, because she thought she was in big trouble.

So pitiful.

I wasn't upset or anything, just shocked more or less.  What did you do??  When did you do this??  I wanted to burst out laughing and start crying all at the same time.   Big sister ran upstairs and returned with some of Madelyn's hair from their bathroom counter.  Apparently she wanted bangs and decided to give herself some.  She was distraught, and refused to let me try and document the event without putting up some resistance.

Evidence.

At the scene of the crime.

A nice big clump!

Where on earth she came up with that idea is beyond me.  The thought of any of the kids cutting their own hair never crossed my mind, and now that it happened, I was hopelessly lost.  As a father, you want to fix things, make things right for your children.  But how do I fix hair that's been chopped off?? I posted my dilemma on Facebook and fortunately a lot of moms came to the rescue, advising me to get bows and headbands to mask the mistake.  I took their lead and made my own fix, waiting until Mommy got home to figure out how to deal with the debacle.

The second event happened on Tuesday.  I was out for my morning ride on the trail just past Winter Garden when I saw police lights ahead.  Usually not a good sign, especially right on the trail, I thought there was a bad bike crash or some sort of medical emergency.  Turns out, there was a  10 foot alligator that had wandered onto the trail, and was blocking traffic!  Fortunately, I got there at the right time, to see the alligator wranglers finish up tying him up and taping its mouth shut.   But had I been out riding 30 minutes earlier I might've ended up being a snack!

You have the right to remain silent...

Then they called for volunteers to help load the gator up onto their truck.  Most of the spectators were elderly people, the majority women on their morning walks, so many declined and started to retreat back to whence they came.  I thought, here was an opportunity to give back to the community by assisting some people who need help.  Plus, how cool would it be to tell the kids that I had "wrestled" a gator??  So I handed my phone to a lady police officer for her to get my picture (I didn't want to give it to a stranger who could've disappeared while I was preoccupied with keeping myself from getting whacked by the gator's tail) and proceeded to get close to the reptile, listening to the wrangler's instructions and knowing what to expect once the alligator felt itself being lifted.  Fortunately, the team lift and carry process was seamless and without incident.  Unfortunately, the lady officer was so engrossed with watching us carry the animal that she forgot to take an action shot photo!  So I had to settle for the non-exciting  "posed" shot!  But what a cool experience!

See ya later!
