5 Years, 40 Weeks.


It's been a pretty regular, uneventful week:

Picked up an astronaut from school Friday afternoon.

Building some sort of hotel or resort...

Trying out some bikes at the new Harley Davidson exhibit!

JUST KIDDING!!!

We did it!!!  We beat the Panthers in Super Bowl 50!!!

The DENVER BRONCOS are WORLD CHAMPIONS!!!!!!

How on earth they pulled it off is beyond me, but let's just say that our stout defense gave Carolina's quarterback Cam Newton a nightmare of a game on Sunday.  He kept scrambling, and couldn't make the big plays he's been known for all season.  The pass rush sacked him 7 times, which was 2 times more than both the NFC Divisional and Championship games combined.  And they hit him 20 times, more than any game he played this year!  Meanwhile, the "No Fly Zone" kept his receivers covered, with limited completions, adding an interception and 3 fumble recoveries!  The defense stepped up and saved the best for last, and they were rewarded handsomely with a Super Bowl title.

Actually, both defenses played great.  Our offense started well but then struggled to move the ball down the field, relying on McManus to hit 3 field goals or Colquitt to punt and pin the Panthers deep in their side.  Manning threw an interception as well as had 2 strip sacks, with them only converting 3 points off our turnovers, compared to us getting 14 off of theirs.   The offense scored its first and only touchdown with 4 minutes left in the game, after Miller's 2nd strip sack of Newton, with a 2 point conversion to give them a 24-10 lead that became the final score.   Offensively it was an ugly game, producing only 194 yards of total offense for any winner in Super Bowl history.  But no matter.  Manning gets his 2nd championship, the only quarterback to ever win a Super Bowl with 2 different teams!

Speaking of Manning, everyone expects that this was his last run, his last game.   At 39 years of age, he is the oldest quarterback ever to play in and win a Super Bowl, the previous one being former Broncos QB and now EVP/GM John Elway.  Elway was integral in bringing Peyton to Denver 4 years ago, and constructed this championship team to help give Manning another title.  After being soundly beaten by Seattle at the Super Bowl 2 years ago, Elway refocused on creating a crushing defense that would support Manning's offense.  He brought in former Broncos backup QB and Offensive Coordinator Gary Kubiak this year as Head Coach, after firing John Fox after last year's loss to Indianapolis.  I wonder how John Fox feels right now?  Kubiak steered the team all season amidst injuries and controversy, all the way to the Championship.   By winning on Sunday, Kubiak became the 3rd person to win a Super Bowl as head coach for the team he used to play for!  

Back to Manning, I do hope he retires, this is the only way to go out.  On top, as a champion.  This was how Elway did it, retiring after he won back-to-back championships in '97 and '98.  This was how they drew it up for him, to give him the opportunity to win and walk off into the sunset.  He has his records, his legacy, and now, his 2nd championship.  As much as it pains me to admit it, it's time.  It's the perfect storybook ending to an amazing career.  There's nothing else to prove.

And so, we end this football season with pride [and relief!] as we celebrate our successful year.  It's been a long time coming, and I'm so glad we were all able to experience it, especially with the kids, making them fans for life.
