Birthday Weekend Surprise

2 Years, 1 Week

You would have thought I was a little girl by the way I screamed out loud.  You would have thought I was a little boy by the way I jumped up and down.  And you would have thought I was crazy insane by the way I grabbed and embraced the individual standing in front of me.

My little brother, all the way from California.

In town for just 2 days on business, he flew in a few hours early just in time to surprise us at the twins' birthday party.  And what a surprise it was!  Seriously, there could not have been another person so far removed from my mind to show up for the party, especially since we had close to 35 adults and 35 kids including 8 infants coming to celebrate with Maddy and Kohl.  I was ecstatic, as were my parents and the children, to have Uncle Mike with us, if but for just a small time.  It would've been perfect had Auntie Gen and Cousin Preston come along too!

Braelyn couldn't believe it was Uncle Mike either!

It was a packed house, but luckily we held the party over at the clubhouse, so the kids could keep busy at the playground or swim in the frigid pool, which didn't bother any of them, including some really brave dads (aka Duncan).   Lolo and Lala had arrived with my younger cousin the evening prior, and the morning of my Aunt and Uncle arrived from Avon Park to assist us in the preparation of the food and decorations at the clubhouse.  We had an assortment of goodies, including 4 different selections of mini sandwiches, a vegetable platter, varieties of fruit, choices of crackers and cookies, and an amazing 3-tier, multi-flavored Dora and Diego themed cake made by our good friend and personal baker, Jennifer Bergherm of Sweet Expectations Bakery!

The cake!  It looked too good to eat!

Bottom layer was banana cream, with chocolate peanut butter in the middle,
and then the top layer was red velvet, a special order just for me!

The party went off without a hitch, with perfect weather conditions, considering that the night before we were pounded by severe lightning and thunderstorms due to a cold front coming in.  So yes, we lucked out, although we would've been fine even with the rain. Remembering Braelyn's rainy birthday party at Sea World a month ago, this group could handle just about anything!

Here's a recap of the week:

  • Friday evening we joined the Cochrans, Bergherms, and for the first time, the Ottatis, at the Food Truck Pod in Ocoee.  Even with the threat of severe weather and swirling clouds, we braved the elements for a chance to partake in some great eats, including hitting the Swedish food truck and getting my favorite hotdog in the world:  the Tunnbrödsrulle (sounds just like it's spelled) complete with mashed potato!  We managed to eat and jet back home right in time for the heavens to open up and downpour just seconds where we were.

Maddy, Gabriella, Kohl and Blake play while we take turns getting our food.

  • Sabbath we attended church, and celebrated the twins' birthday with their class.  We headed back home for a quick lunch and nap before Lolo and Lala arrived that afternoon.  We had a nice supper of Vietnamese Pho that evening, and afterwards a Skype session with Papa and Nana in Denver to wish the two a happy birthday.  Food and party preps were the highlights that night.

Kohlden blows his candles first.

Maddy follows suit.

Kohl wasn't too agreeable to a nap.

Watching Lolo and Lala pull up into the driveway.

  • Sunday was the big day, with an early start to get the clubhouse decorated and set up.  We had the place until 1:30 pm, and after cleaning up we joined the Grodacks who were looking at some home listings with their realtor along with the sales manager of our community.  We're trying to convince them to come move out here because #1:  the houses are huge and #2: they're very affordable.  And how awesome would it be to have them as neighbors right? Anyway, it was neat to go and look at the homes, and it was like how we were doing that just a few years ago.  When we got back I went to mow the lawn, and then Mike and the Clarkes joined us for dinner back at our place, then had the twins open their presents (with big sister getting really jealous and wanting to open them herself!)   Later I took Mike back and caught up with him, talking with him face to face for the first time as a brand new father.  We spoke for nearly 3 hours about life and how we would help support each other, now as fathers, to our young children.

Cousin Lyka was great watching the twins all weekend.

  • Monday morning I had my follow up visit to the optometrist.  My parents had [surprisingly] spent the night since Mike was here and were watching the twins for me while I went back to the eye doctor.  He said that with the drops the abrasions were gone and scarring was minimal, but the blurriness was still there and he said he noticed several dry spots scattered around the lens, due to the contact lens ripping out pieces when I removed them and leaving craters in its place.  So, I'm on another prescription eye drop, this time a steroid to help with any inflammation and hopefully help with moisture, along with a couple of eye drop lubricants for both day and night to help with the dryness.  Wow, I didn't realize my warranty expired at age 35!  Later that afternoon I took the kids to the Science Center where Tangie picked them up, so I could go attend my first ever parent/teacher conference with Braelyn's teacher at OJA.  She had nothing but praise for Braelyn and her academic skills, sharing that Braelyn was definitely a leader in her classroom.  I was so proud of her that the following day I took her out shopping for a toy as a reward!

All this for one eye.

  • Wednesday I hooked up with Jared for the first time in like a month and we took the kids down to Sea World for the morning.  The worst part of this is getting up real early in order to make it down there when the park opens, but the best part is getting there real early when the park opens.  I mean, we parked on row 8!  And the place wasn't crowded or packed, even with a perfect weather day like it was.  We let them run about, but only had time for one show, the pets ahoy one with those very talented animals, and then it was back home for naps before heading out to pick up big sister.  Sea World has a new exhibit called Turtle Trac that opened on Thursday...we missed it by one day!

The twins mesmerized by the dolphins.

Quotes:

I really don't have any good ones but I just wanted to document words/sentences that they are saying now:

Maddy:  "Thank you sooo much!"

Kohl:  "Daya (Daddy), what doing?"  and "Hee go!" (Here you go!)

Brae:   "Why?" and "I already know that!"

Thanks to Uncle Mike and Tangie for taking the pictures and videos this week.  I'm hoping to resolve this no camera situation by next week, cross your fingers!

Here's the parting shot: Tangie reading the children's bedtime story.

Until then, have a great weekend!

2 For 2!

Exactly 2 Years

Kohl:  26 1b  15.5 oz
Maddy:  26  lb  3 oz

I can still remember the exact moment the nurse winked at me just seconds before we heard her scream;  she had been born unresponsive, her skin a pale blue color.  It was the most scared I had ever been, realizing that at any moment we could possibly lose our new baby girl, and hoping, praying that they could revive her.  Her twin brother was doing fine but she was the one who would make the pair complete.  I was numb, dazed and paralyzed to show any signs of frantic worry, but I still found myself mumbling, earnestly praying to God to save my daughter's fragile life.  I most likely squeezed the blood out of Tangie's hand as I watched the unit of doctors and nurses work with a furious calm.  Please God, don't let this happen.  Please.

And then she screamed.

4/19/2010

Fast forward to today, as we celebrate our twins' second birthday.  2 YEARS OLD!  I can't believe we've made it through another year, let alone 2 years of being parents to multiples AND an older sibling.  This has truly been quite the experience, and especially this past year has definitely shown Tangie and I what we are capable of.

To think that even a year ago, Madelyn and Kohlden were barely walking, crawling even; their communication relegated to just whines, grunts, and cries.  Now you can't get them to sit still to eat dinner, and are absorbing words and phrases to repeat later on.  It has been amazing to watch their development up close and every day.  And though the growth may seem small day to day, much like watching a vine grow, you can certainly see the difference over a long period of time.

They say that bad things happen in threes, so I guess that was our case this week. Firstly, our camera died, which would explain the lack of pictures and videos on this post.  It was an old camera anyway; Tangie got it for a deal on Black Friday 2010.  And it didn't help that I accidentally dropped it on our tile floor.  Secondly, Braelyn and Calleigh found one goldfish, Madelyn, floating and dead early Sunday morning.  I quickly flushed it down the toilet, not thinking if Calleigh or Aubree had ever participated in a fish funeral. The third bad thing was finding three more fish dead early Monday morning.  That left poor Kohlden swimming all by himself all week.  At least they were only 24 ¢ each.

Here are some highlights:

  • Sabbath we attended church, and then joined the Clarkes and Bergherms for lunch at Sweet Tomatoes.  Afterwards Tangie and the twins went home for naps, as I took Braelyn back to church for her Adventurer's Investiture program.  She had fun receiving her certificate and trophy, and has now graduated to the Eager Beavers (seriously, I'm not making this up!) for next year.  That evening after dinner at Uno's Chicago Pizza, Tangie continued to work on our taxes while I cleaned the house and kitchen for the following morning.

So cute in her uniform and all those honors!

And yes, they can still act silly!

Her class lining up to receive their awards.  Congrats Calleigh on getting Adventurer of the Year!

Supper at Uno's Chicago Pizza.

Part of the kids' menu was create your own pizza, which she thoroughly enjoyed.

Can you tell how exhausted they were?!?

  • Sunday morning we were joined by the Bergherms and Grodacks for brunch at our house.  Usually it's a lunch or dinner get together with these guys, aside from the Easter brunch a couple weeks ago, so it was nice to have them over early to start out the day.  It was a gorgeous day with fantastic temperatures, and perfect for an outing to the Winter Garden Spring Festival, so that's what we all did after eating.  There were lots of fun, free things for the children to do and lots of samples of plants and products being handed out by the vendors. Afterwards the Grodacks went back to our place for a pizza lunch, before Duncan and I headed out to play 18 at the Forest Lake Golf Club.

Can you spot Maddy?  This was at the hands of her big sister!

Creating and coloring their ladybug containers.

Maddy and definitely Kohl enjoying the small kids' bouncy house.

Braelyn rides in a lawn mower pulled train/wagon ride made out of 50 gallon drums.

Maybe we should have invested in a 3 seat stroller?

  • Monday morning I had an appointment with the eye doctor to try to see why I've been having some blurred vision in my right eye over the past couple of weeks.  I remember taking my contacts off one night and it hurt more than usual, but I figured I had dry eyes or some sand or something.  Anyway, I started noticing the blurriness through my glasses, as usually my left eye is weaker than my right.  I couldn't figure out why and upon researching online, started to get a little worried when causes for blurriness in one eye came up with diabetes and/or stroke.  Well, it wasn't either one (unless it happens to be the slowest stroke ever) and when the optometrist examined my eye he found some pretty bad scratches on my eye lens that had started scarring, which resulted in the blurriness.  So right now I'm on prescription medication drops and wearing my eye glasses for a week, with a follow up exam on Monday to get some stronger contacts.  Oh well, at least I'm not dying...yet.

Do you see [or not see] what I mean?

  • This week Tangie had several late nights, so I had some solo evenings with the children.  We have been planning the twins' birthday party coming up this weekend so I've been busy with the kids running errands and getting supplies.   We're having a pool party at the clubhouse and so far we have a good number of families and their children coming.  I just hope the weather forecast holds up.

It's puzzle time!

Here they were watching Dora the Explorer but I don't know why they were all bundled up in the blankets...

Maddy's injury of the week:

Was running and tripped, skinning her pretty knees.  Nothing a couple of bandages couldn't fix.

Quotes:
  • Friday evening Tangie was going over the Sabbath School lesson with Braelyn for church the next day:
Tangie:  "Okay, can you tell me what the memory verse is?"
Brae:  "And God said, 'I will make you human beings forever!'"

          Hmmm.....okay.....

  • The twins and I were at Costco picking up some supplies when all of a sudden they both saw an older man with a small white beard down at the end of our very busy aisle:
Maddy:  [Screams and points to him]  "SANTA!!!!"
          Kohl:  "Ho, Ho, Ho!"

This, of course, prompts me and all the surrounding customers to burst out laughing.
Luckily the old man didn't hear them!

Hope you guys have a great weekend!

Easter Traditions

1 Year, 51 Weeks.

Easter is one of the more traditional holidays I enjoy, partly because it meant that the malls were closed and I had the day off to spend time with the family.  It also involved getting together with friends and family and enjoying some really good food.  And who doesn't enjoy a good Easter egg hunt, or two, or three?  I know, I know.  The true meaning of Easter doesn't have anything to do with that, or a bunny, or chocolate.  I don't even know how those things came about to represent the holiday...probably some marketing scheme for retailers to make some additional revenue between Valentine's and Mother's day.  Well it worked, obviously.

And really, what says Easter more than a gift basket of chocolate and wine?
This retails for [no joke] $149.99!

Don't get me wrong.  I love the get togethers and festivities and chocolates as much as the next person.  But honestly how many people, and especially children, truly associate the holiday with the death and resurrection of Christ, fulfilling the Plan of Salvation and triumphing over Evil and sin?

Probably not as much as the throng in line to get their pictures taken with a stranger in an Easter Bunny costume.

That said, here was our week:

  • Friday Brae had the day off so I took them all to the park in the morning, and when big fat raindrops started to drop not 10 minutes after we got there, drove across town to take them to the Orlando Science Center, a more weather convenient option for recreation and entertainment.

Maddy working the tools puzzle.

Braelyn working on her sketches.

Kohl working the miter saw.

I think she was trying to wash her hands!

Doing the water play.  Thank goodness for the splash guards!

Watching a very slow tortoise.

Daddy, this is how it would be if I had horns on my head!

Hard cheese at the kitchen play area.

  • Sabbath morning we headed to church in our Easter best, and after naps headed to the Bergherms for an Easter shindig with the usual suspects. Wonderfully decorated and impressive as always, Jennifer created a "Resurrection Egg Hunt" where the children looked for eggs in numerical order for them to finish a Bible puzzle at the end.  Very creative!

We swung by Winter Park's egg hunt.  10,000 eggs and we came up empty handed!

Stomping on the flower garden after church.

En vogue.

  • Sunday morning we jetted to the east part of the state and had our traditional Easter Brunch and egg hunt at Duncan's parents' home.  Ron and Elaine Gregory have had us over each year ever since Brae and Calleigh were 1 year olds, and 4 years later our group has ballooned with the additional children. It was nice to partake in some great food and watching the children participate in the gathering of eggs.  They worked up such a sweat they braved the 74° F swimming pool afterwards.  That afternoon they went down for naps and then Tangie took them to the park, while I participated in another Easter holiday tradition:  watching the final round of the Masters golf tournament!

Going bananas on our way to Ron and Elaine's.

and why Calleigh was either laughing or crying.

  • Monday Brae had the day off from school so I rounded up the kids and took them to PetSmart to look at the animals, as opposed to taking them to a zoo. Well, the plan backfired on me, and now we are proud owners of 5 new pets, all goldfish (thank God), each one representing and named after a member of our family.

Checking out the many pet options the store had to offer.

Happy she didn't come home empty handed!

our weekly Costco run.

  • Wednesday the twins and I attended a tea party with Braelyn's class at OJA, complete with muffins and cucumber sandwiches!  I'd never before imagined in my life that I, a pretty rugged, devastatingly handsome and masculine male, would ever attend a little girl's tea party, although I knew it would probably happen later down the road.  But I went, and I LOVED IT.  I mean, yeah, the tea was nice...   That evening Brae and I attended our last Adventurer's meeting of the year and prepared for Investiture this upcoming Sabbath.

Random:

  • I just recently saw a preview for this chick flick coming in May called "What to expect when you're expecting" and it looks pretty funny, especially when all the fathers are together and confess about their mess ups with their kids.  Any dads out there concur?  No judging!

Quotes:

  • Last Friday we were just about to have dinner when the house phone rang.  I didn't recognize the number on the screen, but it was local so I picked it up:
          Me:  "Hello?"

          [pause]

Man:  "Hello?  Hi, I'm so and so with such and such and can I speak to a female
in the residence between the ages of 25 and 40 for some market
                     research?"
Me:  "No, I'm sorry so and so, but we're having dinner right now and
don't have time for market research."
Man:  "Really?  Because this would only take a brief moment..."
Me:  "Alas, I'm afraid that brief moment has just passed.  Goodbye."  [click]

          Telemarketers must love me!
